Wearable GPS trackers

There are several different GPS trackers available to track someone’s whereabouts. This is helpful for those who may wander or get lost while out in the community. Many systems also allow alerts to be sent to caregivers when a loved one goes outside of the geotracking area.

What to look for and consider in a GPS tracker for monitoring in the community

  • Two way calling: Many trackers allow for two-way voice calls between the wearer and the caregiver.
  • Waterproof design: Consider a waterproof design to ensure the individual does not need to worry while washing hands, doing dishes, etc.
  • Location-based alerts: This allows the unit to ‘ping’ your phone when your loved ones arrives at or departs from their designated destination.
  • Wi-Fi support: Some GPS wearables offer Wi-Fi support which allows the device to work better when indoors and away from good GPS reception.
  • Fit and comfort: It is important that the device is not bothersome to the wearer or desire to wear it may become an issue.
  • Monthly fee: Many GPS trackers require a monthly fee ($5/month - $50 /month). Make sure you are aware of the fee before purchasing.
  • Battery life: Consider the battery life in conjunction with the features. Battery life will be much less for a GPS tracker that is constantly updating the real time location.
